Volkswagen XL1

The 1-litre-per-100km car that became the world's most aerodynamic production vehicle.

Unveiled at the 2011 Qatar Motor Show, the XL1 was the third and definitive step in VW's quest for a car that could travel 100 km on a single litre of fuel. A two-cylinder 800 cc TDI diesel worked alongside an electric motor in a plug-in hybrid tandem, housed in a teardrop carbon-fibre monocoque weighing just 795 kg with a class-leading drag coefficient of 0.186. It achieved a combined 0.9 l/100 km and 24 g/km CO2, and later reached a tiny limited production run of 250 units.
