Calder BMW 3.0 CSL Art Car #1 (1975), front three-quarter view

The first BMW Art Car - Calder's bold color blocks on a Le Mans 3.0 CSL.

American sculptor Alexander Calder launched the BMW Art Car series in 1975, painting a 3.0 CSL racer at the invitation of driver Herve Poulain. Sweeping planes of red, yellow, blue and white echoed his mobiles and stabiles, and the car went on to race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans that year. It remains the founding work of the collection.
