Andy Warhol BMW M1 Art Car #4 (1979), front view

Andy Warhol's hand-painted M1 - the only Art Car the artist painted himself.

Andy Warhol painted the BMW M1 Group 4 racer directly by hand in about 28 minutes, rather than working from a scale model as other artists did. His broad expressionist brushstrokes aimed to convey speed and motion. The car raced at Le Mans in 1979, finishing sixth overall and second in class.
